How Do I Attach a Wall Shelf Securely on the Wall?

Wall Shelving with Functional Brackets

A shelf with elbow brackets is probably the most common type of hanging shelf. Lateral brackets double as bookends and keep everything else in check that could take a nosedive off the shelf. Inwardly offset shelf brackets can be very attractive decorative elements.

 

Floating Shelves with Invisible Brackets

The perfect choice for minimalists and fans of the Scandinavian look: Floating shelf brackets  disappear inside the shelf board. They are invisible from the outside and the shelf seems to be floating weightlessly on the wall.

All that can be seen is the minimalist design of the wall shelving. All the space and the full load-bearing capacity can be used and you don’t have to arrange your books or decorations around any brackets.

Shelf with Keyhole Mounting

The keyhole bracket, which slots into the back of the cube frame, is an elegant solution if you want to attach your product without visible attachment elements.

One important point: This type of wall mounting requires precision when you are drilling your holes, as you can't make any corrections afterwards. The bore holes must be drilled exactly in line with the keyholes in the shelf.

Some shelves are wall-mounted with a sawtooth attachment. This type of wall attachment forgives small inaccuracies when drilling or hammering, because the longish sawtooth plates allow for a bit of offset, which means the shelf can be nudged a little bit until it is perfectly level.

How Sturdy are Wall Shelves?

Is the wall strong enough to hold a heavy wall shelf? Here is an easy trick: Knock on the wall to find out how sturdy it is. 

 Concrete and Honeycomb Brick

A dull muffled sound points towards a brick or concrete wall. Walls like these can hold heavy weights, which means things like books or heavy pottery will be safe.

Drywall

A hollow sound will most likely mean that you are dealing with plasterboard. These walls are most likely not suitable for mounting heavy wall shelves. Hanging some small decorative wall shelving that won’t be holding heavy weights won't be a problem for that type of wall.

Assembly material

All our wall shelving comes with universal wall anchors for brickwork as well as plasterboard. Please note that the max. load-bearing capacity of a wall shelving is reduced when it is mounted on plasterboard.

Tip for old flats

The walls in older buildings are usually constructed with bricks, sandstone, hollow bricks or have had concrete repair work done, which may make them very porous. This is what you do if a bit of the wall breaks away during drilling making the hole much too large or if sand starts trickling out because you hit a joint: Mix some quick setting concrete from the DIY store and fill the opening. Once the mix has set, you can drill again in the same place and the wall will usually be a lot more robust there.
